| Learn more about why the HomeCamera+DCS2120 combination is so useful |
The HomeCamera-enhanced DCS2120 is probably the easiest to setup and easiest to use wifi camera in the world.
With this camera, you enter your user ID and password, camera name, and some other simple information that'll take no longer than 1 minute to enter. Hit Apply and you're done. Conventional network / wifi cameras, on the other hand, are scandalously difficult to setup (yes, “scandalously” difficult!). |

Here’s what you need to know if you want to setup a non-HomeCamera-enabled network / IP camera:
- how to login to your home router
- how the global DNS system works, what’s static DNS and what’s dynamic DNS and why this is important
- how to set up a “Dynamic DNS account” with a “free DDNS provider”
- how to enter this information back into your router and/or your wireless camera.
Having done this, you now need to:
- understand the concept of NAT (network address translation) and the difference between private and public IP addresses
- understand how to setup NAT on your router to point to the internal private IP address of your camera
- understand the concept of “port forwarding”, which ports you need to forward, and how to set this up on your router
- pray that you’ve done everything right, ‘cause if a single step is wrong, the whole process won’t work, you won’t know which step is wrong, and there’s no one around to help (other than the neighbourhood tech genius - and even she might find some of these concepts difficult to grasp).
It isn’t unusual to spend hours trying to get this right - and for the system to occasionally - and for no particular reason - just not work. It explains why so many network cameras lie around unused in closets and attics! |

With a HomeCamera-enabled network / wifi camera, like the D-Link DCS-2120, you don’t need to bother with ANY of the above. Create your free HomeCamera account, enter your HomeCamera details in the camera settings page, hit OK, and you’re done. We’re not exaggerating - it really is that easy. |
Plus, you get access to all HomeCamera services, including:
 |
You can instruct HomeCamera to automatically take snapshots or video clips from your camera and save them on the server, so you can login from anywhere in the world and get a quick overview of what happened in your home. e.g. one of our colleagues has set up the HomeCamera service to record still pictures every 5 minutes from 1 pm to 5 pm every weekday. |

|
 |
Just enter the email address of the person you’d like to share your camera with and she will receive an email inviting her to access your camera - best of all, she won’t be charged a single dime for this; one of our colleagues uses this feature to provide access to his baby’s room to his grandparents, living in a different part of the world; a friend uses this to share access to his “dog-camera” with his spouse. |

 |
You can access your camera from anywhere in the world, using any mobile phone or PDA, regardless of which mobile service provider you subscribe to (excluding a handful of mobile service providers who don’t want you to access any content other than their own). |

|
 |
You can use any Web browser to access HomeCamera; this includes browsers such as Firefox, Camino, Safari, Opera, and others that do not support ActiveX. |
